Premier League confirms the "blackout rule".

❓ But what is this "blackout rule"?

It is a rule that prohibits live broadcasts of domestic or foreign matches between 2:45 p.m. and 5:15 p.m. on Saturdays in the United Kingdom.

❓ What does it do?

The rule is meant to incentivize fans to go to the stadium, even to watch lower league matches.

❓ Why is it being discussed?

The Premier League is about to put domestic TV rights back on the market.

The current ones, signed with Sky, BT, Amazon and BBC, expire in 2024/2025.

❓ Why can the Premier League use this rule?

Article 48 of the UEFA Statutes reads:

Both UEFA (relative to all matches) and football clubs (relative to matches in which they participate) may sell licenses for live radio broadcasting of UEFA Champions League matches on a non-exclusive basis.

It would be interesting to understand how much the "blackout rule" affects media bids for the next tv rights auction.
