Let's start right away with a shocking number.
Instagram followers:
Kings League: 1.3 mln ❗
Italian Serie A: 8.9 mln
French Ligue 1: 3.9 mln
✅ What is the Kings league Infojobs ?
It's a 7-player tournament organized by Piqué and popular streamer Ibai Llanos.
Matches are streamed live on the league's Twitch channel.
The commentators are streamers and influencers, much more active than journalists on TV.
They also discuss with referees and players during the match.
✅ What are the rules?
There are 12 teams, each playing 11 games before the playoffs for the title.
The games last 40 minutes, divided into two halves.
A game begins with both teams lined up on the goal line, similar to water polo, before racing forward to reach the ball in the center of the pitch.
In case of a draw, it's decided by penalties (they are moving).
There are bonuses chosen by the coaches: penalty or free kick in favor or eliminating a rival player for 2 minutes.
✅ Fans involved = Fun guaranteed
Fans can vote for the best players and participate in polls to indicate substitutions or transfers.
As commentators and players, they have alternated between well-known web personalities in Spain and professional athletes:
- Sergio Aguero, Manchester City Football Club's top scorer, is the president of the Kunisports team.
- Former Spain and Real Madrid goalkeeper Iker Casillas is president of 1K FC.
- The xBuyer Team had a masked player for a few games, with followers trying to find out his name.
🚨 Is it a menace to football clubs?
The lack of attention of many clubs to their relationship with the fans is underestimated.
It's often said that football suffers from competition from Netflix and video games.
👉 But what if a new kind of football is the real threat?
What if one Saturday in 2025 there was a simultaneous Mbappé League tournament and Haaland League tournament?
Are we sure that fans would watch the LaLiga, Lega Serie A, or Bundesliga International GmbH matches?
No club can rest on its laurels.
✅ Fans are crucial (even more in the attention economy!)
The fan of tomorrow (morning) wants to:
- Feel part of the sporting event
- Take part in some of the decisions
- Enjoy the unpredictability of the event and not just the outcome
- Consider every minute of the event important
- Be surprised every Sunday
Clubs can do all this.
In fact, I'm very bullish about the possibilities for clubs to create a fan bond in line with current social and tech trends.
Clubs that put the player and the fan at the center of their strategy will have no competition.
They will win big time!
I will never stop repeating this.
